Google's Gemini App Broadens Reach, Now Supports Older Android Versions

In a significant expansion of compatibility, Google's Gemini app is now available on devices running Android 10, according to user reports and tech insiders. This marks a departure from its earlier requirement of Android 12 or newer, broadening the potential user base significantly.

Technology watchers first spotted the update when users on X (formerly Twitter) reported that Gemini was running smoothly on their Android 10 devices. Notable technology blog, 9to5Google, picked up on these user testimonials, adding credibility to the observations. Sumanta Das, a user of the app, stated, "the Gemini app works well" on his device, while Artem Rusakovsky from APK Mirror confirmed, "The latest version of Gemini is the first to support Android 10 and 11."

Further testing by various tech publications on devices like the Pixel smartphone with Android 10 installed echoed these findings, showing that the app's performance was on par with versions running on Android 14.

Despite the lack of an official announcement from Google regarding this backward compatibility, it appears that the tech giant is keen on incorporating more devices into its AI framework. The Gemini app, known for its on-device AI assistant capabilities, can handle a variety of AI-generated tasks and basic device functionalities. However, it still lacks access to third-party applications, an area where Google Assistant continues to dominate.

Looking ahead, Google is reportedly working on enhancing the capabilities of the Gemini AI assistant. Upcoming features may include the ability to interact with third-party music streaming services like Spotify and YouTube Music directly through the app, potentially increasing its utility and user engagement.

This development reflects Google's ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and functionality of its AI offerings, aiming to make advanced technology available to a broader audience.
