April 26, 2024 – Volkswagen has officially unveiled its much-anticipated new SUV, the Tayron, at the Beijing Motor Show. After several spy shots and a design leak earlier in the year, the SUV is finally here in a 5-seater configuration, although there is strong indication that a 7-seater variant will also be available in selected markets, including India.
The Tayron impresses with its substantial dimensions, measuring 4,735mm in length, 1,859mm in width, and 1,682mm in height, positioning it close to the size of the Toyota Fortuner. It adopts a design language similar to that of the new Tiguan, featuring a modern closed-off grille flanked by connected LED daytime running lights. The sportier R variant and lower-tier models will feature distinct styling cues, particularly around the air dam.
Aesthetically, the Tayron boasts a dynamic side profile with a coupe-like C-pillar and striking wrap-around tail lamps at the rear complemented by blacked-out elements. Inside, the Tayron mirrors the interior design of the new Tiguan, with a minimalist yet high-tech dashboard dominated by screens, including a digital instrument cluster, an infotainment system, and an additional screen for the co-passenger.
Key features of the SUV include a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging, heads-up display, dual-zone climate control, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Under the hood, the Tayron for the Chinese market is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine available in two tunes: 181 bhp for the standard models and 214 bhp for the R variant. While international versions may see the addition of a 2.0-litre diesel and a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid, the Indian market is expected to receive the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine similar to the one in the Kodiaq. The transmission will likely be a 7-speed DCT, with an all-wheel-drive option available.
Volkswagen is considering introducing the Tayron in India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), with the 7-seater variant that was recently tested in Germany. Given the CBU approach, prospective buyers can anticipate a price point north of Rs 50 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Upon its launch, the Tayron will compete with established SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, and MG Gloster, aiming to carve out a niche in the premium SUV segment in India.
