Meta's popular social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, faced a widespread outage, leaving thousands of users worldwide unable to access their accounts. According to outage tracking website Downdetector, the disruption affected a significant number of users, reminiscent of a similar incident in March this year.
Downdetector data revealed that over 18 thousand reports flooded in from users encountering difficulties with accessing the Instagram app. Among these reports, 59% cited issues with accessing the app altogether, while 34% reported server connection problems, and 7% struggled with logging into their accounts. Downdetector aggregates status reports from various sources, including user feedback, to track outages.
Additionally, the internet monitoring group NetBlocks posted on X (formerly Twitter), confirming the international scale of the outages affecting both platforms. The post clarified that the incident was not linked to country-level internet disruptions or filtering.
Frustrated users took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their concerns and experiences. Some encountered error messages such as 'Something went wrong' or 'error loading media' when attempting to use the platforms.
