A day after India and Iran inked a significant 10-year agreement to oversee operations at the strategic Iranian port of Chabahar, the United States has issued a stern warning. Vedant Patel, the deputy spokesperson for the US State Department, emphasized the potential risks of sanctions for any entity engaging in business deals with Iran.
Patel, in his daily news conference, underscored the persistent enforcement of US sanctions on Iran, despite the recent pact between India and Iran regarding the Chabahar port. When pressed on whether the Chabahar port enjoyed an exemption from these sanctions, Patel negated any such privilege.
The Chabahar port, crucial for India's connectivity with Afghanistan and Central Asia, had previously obtained a waiver from US sanctions under the Trump administration. However, Patel's remarks suggest that the extension of this waiver, particularly in light of the new pact, remains subject to discussion between US and Indian officials.
India's involvement in the Chabahar port dates back to May 2016 when a Trilateral Agreement was signed between India, Iran, and Afghanistan to establish the International Transport and Transit Corridor. India's contributions to the port's development, including the supply of equipment and the operation through its subsidiary, India Ports Global Chabahar Free Zone (IPGCFZ), have been significant.
Since assuming operations in December 2018, IPGCFZ has facilitated substantial cargo traffic, including container and bulk shipments. Moreover, the port has played a vital role in humanitarian efforts, such as the transshipment of wheat and pulses to Afghanistan and the supply of pesticide to Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While there has been no official response from the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the US warning, sources have downplayed the comments, citing a lack of full awareness on the part of the spokesperson. Nevertheless, the cautionary tone from the US underscores the complexities surrounding international engagements with Iran amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
