New Honor Flip Phone with Clamshell Design May Be in Development

In an exciting development for smartphone enthusiasts, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor appears to be working on a new clamshell-style flip phone with a unique angular design. The company, already established in the foldable smartphone market with its Honor Magic V series, has yet to release a clamshell model. However, a recent patent filing hints at what could be an innovative addition to their lineup.

According to a report by Gizmochina, a patent filed by Honor in 2022 was recently approved by China's National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). The patent images reveal a clamshell foldable phone featuring sharp, geometric edges—an aesthetic departure from the more common rounded corners seen in most flip phones on the market today. The design also includes a pill-shaped cutout in the top-left corner, speculated to house the camera unit and cover display.

In an interview with CNBC at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in February, Honor CEO George Zhao confirmed that the company was developing a flip-style smartphone, which could potentially launch later this year. However, the timing of the patent approval in May suggests this specific design might not be the one Zhao referenced.

Rumors about a flip phone from Honor have been circulating for a while. Just recently, renowned tipster Digital Chat Station posted a render of a supposed Honor flip phone with a circular camera unit, further fueling speculation. This device, believed to be named the Honor V Flip, is expected to launch in June. The V Flip is rumored to feature a large cover display and a 4,500mAh dual-cell battery, positioning it as a strong competitor against upcoming models like the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Flip 6.

As Honor continues to innovate and expand its product offerings, the potential release of a clamshell-style flip phone with a distinctive angular design could make a significant impact in the competitive smartphone market.
