In a strategic move to bolster its global supply chain, Google is planning to establish India as a central production hub for its Pixel smartphones. According to a report from Moneycontrol, the tech giant has initiated trial production of these devices in Tamil Nadu with Foxconn, a notable manufacturer that also produces iPhones for Apple in India. The formal announcement of this development is expected later this year.
The report indicates that Google aims to export these India-made Pixel phones to Europe initially, with plans to meet the demand in the US subsequently. The move is seen as an effort to diversify its manufacturing footprint and reduce reliance on other regions.
Google's Pixel 9 series, set to be unveiled on August 13, is expected to feature devices partially manufactured in India. Two firms, Dixon Technologies' subsidiary Paget Electronics and Taiwan-based Foxconn, have been contracted for the production. Foxconn will handle the standard models, while the 'Pro' models will be manufactured by Paget Electronics.
The decision to focus on exports stems from the relatively low demand for Pixel smartphones in India. However, local manufacturing offers Google the advantage of the Indian government's production-linked incentive (PLI) program, which provides financial incentives based on incremental sales.
The upcoming Pixel 9 series is rumored to introduce new artificial intelligence (AI) features under the Google AI branding. These features may include advanced screenshot capabilities, a "Best Take" feature for enhancing group photos, and an image generation tool named Studio.
As Google gears up for the official launch of the Pixel 9 series and the expansion of its manufacturing operations in India, the company's strategic moves are poised to have a significant impact on its global market presence.
